What a Dual Friction Clutch Is

When you think about a dual friction clutch, it includes four different components. There is the flywheel, the pressure plate, floater plate, and clutch discs. If you are comparing a traditional single disc clutch to dual friction clutches, you’ll notice there are some differences. The biggest differences lie in the floater plate and the dual clutch discs. Your flywheel connects to the crankshaft in the same way as a regular clutch. Next comes the first clutch disk which is followed up by the floater plate. The second disk comes next. The floater plate is an additional surface for the friction material of the clutch disks.

When Do I Need Dual Friction Clutches

In the past few years, technology has had a lot of changes. For instance, years ago, you’d use stage 3 clutches for your daily driver. These clutches had a lot of noise and required a strong leg to handle. With dual disks, those problems are effectively gone. You won’t have to stand on the pedal to make things work; you’ll need minimal pressure instead. Any sort of car can use a dual friction clutch, even if not every car needs one.

While these clutches may have been reserved for high horsepower or modified vehicles in the past, that’s no longer true. You can run a dual clutch on a regular vehicle, knowing you may want to add to it later on down the road.
