Solar eclipses don’t happen very often, and in fact, total eclipses are very rare. If you have the chance to see one, it will be something you can talk about for many years, so get some glasses for solar eclipse viewing long before the event. However, it’s important to be safe during an eclipse and here are some valuable tips for staying safe from harm during eclipses.
Watch the Kids Closely
Whether you’re having a special event or party or just plan to watch the eclipse at home with the kids, make sure they stay safe. Kids might not realize the importance of eye protection so be sure they have glasses for solar eclipse viewing. They are inexpensive, and some have fun colors and images to get the kids interested.
Use Only Approved Viewers
Some people may be tempted to use their sunglasses for viewing an eclipse, but this is a big mistake. Most sunglasses do not filter out enough ultraviolet or infrared rays from the sun. You could damage your eyes and not even realize it.
Don’t use photographic negative film for viewing. This is an old wives’ tale. It doesn’t work, and it’s not safe. Tinted glass is not a good way to view the sun either.
Prepare for a Rainy or Cloudy Day
Make sure you have something for the kids to do if it rains when you travel some distance from home. Bring a special “rainy day” kit with games and activities they can do inside the car. This keeps them out of trouble.
Watch Out for Other Drivers
You may have to drive many miles to get the best view of the event. Make sure and park the car before viewing and be careful wearing glasses for solar eclipse viewing while you drive. They may be too dark and cause you problems.
