What Are Chillers?
Chillers are often used to chill liquids or cool large areas. They work on the same basic principles as refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners. Instead, it removes heat from things, and this produces cold.
How Chillers Work
There is a four step process for chilling:
• Refrigeration – heat gets transferred from equipment, lowering the temperature. This cools it off.
• Liquid to gas – when liquid refrigerant absorbs enough heat it begins to boil. This changes the liquid refrigerant into a gas. The process of evaporation is assisted by either warmed air or water.
• Compression – the gas makes its way into a compressor (powered by equipment like a York chiller motor) where it gets compressed. The act of compression increases the temperature.
• Condensation – Refrigerant (in the form of vapor) gets pumped through the system, and it reaches condenser coils. The causes gas to condense and turn back into liquid form.
