Tips for Keeping Your Drains Clear

No one likes to wake up to a sink that is still filled with yesterday’s dirty dishwater. Clogged drains are more than just an unsightly inconvenience; they can also be hazardous to a homeowner’s or renter’s health. Because of the creation of a disease and bacteria-ridden breeding ground, people with drains that don’t function properly have been known to suffer from allergies, infections and other ailments. Before seeking out drain cleaning Baltimore, here are some tips to prevent this common kitchen problem:

Watch what you put down the drain. Some materials, such as cooking grease, coffee grounds or hair can quickly cause a problem by coating and clogging up pipes. Instead of dumping these materials down the sink, dispose of them properly. For grease, it’s best to store it in an old can or milk container and then throw it in the trash. Coffee grounds can actually be used as great garden fertilizer. And hair should never go down the drain – simply throw it away.

1. Invest in a screen. One easy fix to stop things like hair, soap scum, or food particles from going down into the pipes is to buy a cheap metal grate, found at most home improvement stores, to put over the drain. This can easily be removed and cleaned as needed.

2. Put the good stuff down the sink. Some materials will help unclog a drain that has started to turn the corner between acceptable and a health hazard. It is always helpful to run hot water into the sink after every use. You can also find great success with things found in your kitchen, such as baking soda or vinegar. Throw some baking soda down the drain and chase it with hot water, or pour in some vinegar (about one quarter of a cup) and let it sit for twenty minutes, then pour in some boiling water and use a bathroom plunger to loosen up any gunk.

Of course, it isn’t always possible to DIY. If you’re suffering from a particularly pesky clogged drain Baltimore, you’re in luck with a multitude of service options from plumbing services in Annapolis to Drain Cleaning Baltimore. It’s important to perform regular maintenance on your sinks and bathtubs – don’t get stuck in high water!
