It is so easy to dwell on things that have happened in the past. It’s equally easy to spend a huge amount of time worrying about what the future holds in store. While both of these things can be natural, you can’t let thoughts of your past and future make you forget about the present. An inability to let go of either the past or present can have a huge impact on the current quality of your life. It can take a toll on your professional life, the choices that you make, and even ruin relationships you have with loved ones. While you never want to forget the past, and you want to take steps to ensure that you have a happy future, you also have to make sure that you take the time to enjoy and appreciate the good things happening in your life right at this very moment.
You can’t change the things that have happened in the past. It doesn’t matter if you were a victim of abuse, or if you made a choice you have come to regret. Nothing you will do, will change the way things turned out. On the other hand, you can control what’s happening right now. Instead of thinking about the one you let get away, or the fact that you didn’t handle situations the way you should have, you need to look at the relationships you’re currently in and enjoy the happiness they bring you. You need to learn from your mistakes and let them go.
The future is a different story. You can alter it. You should think about it and how your current actions could change things, however you can’t obsess over it. You don’t even know how long the future will be. You could be missing out on some really good things that are happening to you right at this very second for a future that might not even be there. The thing about the future is that most things fall into place. If you commit yourself to being happy right now, to enjoying every single second of your present, you will find that you have laid the groundwork for a happy future.
The trick to knowing you will have a great future, will be making some good choices right now. Remove yourself from people who bring you down. Take the time to manage your money so that you have a little set aside, can pay your bills, and still have some set aside to have some fun. Learn to laugh at something every day. Take the time to look at the world you’re living in and find one thing that is really good. When you do all of this, you’ll discover that each day truly is a great gift.
