You can give your kitchen a fresh look by painting your old wood cabinets. This project can be done on the weekend.
Prepping the Cabinet Doors and Drawers
The first thing you will want to do is take off all the cabinet doors and drawers. It is also good to take off any knobs and other hardware. Clean off any grime and grease.
Before using paint rollers for a smooth finish to apply the paint, you should take the time to repair any gouges or holes. If you fill the holes in, the cabinets will look almost brand-new after they are painted. It is easy to fill in holes and gouges with a wood filler.
The next step is using sandpaper to smooth out the surface of the cabinets. You only need to sand surfaces that will be visible if you are just looking to give your cabinets a facelift.
Painting the Cabinets
Apply a coat of primer to the surface of the cabinets. After the primer is dry, you can use paint rollers for a smooth finish and a small brush to apply semi-gloss latex paint to the inside edges and outer cabinet sides. These parts can be done quickly.
You want to give special attention to the drawer fronts and cabinet doors. The paint should be applied in thin coats. If more than one coat is needed, allow the paint to dry for at least four hours before applying a second or third coat.
After everything is dry, you can reapply the knobs and put the cabinets back together. You will then be able to enjoy a kitchen that looks almost new.
