Welding is the joining of separate components to produce a weldment. This process is essential to producing a manufactured product. Unlike some occupations, a welder places him or herself into situations where the risk is high for a serious problem to result. It, therefore, is imperative for welders in Minneapolis and other cities and towns throughout the United States to always seriously consider their safety and that of everyone in the shop.

Basic Safety Concerns

Welders work in shops that can be hazardous to their health. The conditions can also be extremely dangerous to the entire shop if everyone does not understand the potential problems. For a welder, the major issues facing him or her on a daily basis are very real. Consider the following issues:

Fire

Fire is a potent force. It helps welder weld. However, any sparks or splatter from a torch/arc can ignite material producing a blaze that can burn a person or destroy a shop. Welders must make sure they use the torch carefully. They must keep the work area clean. They must also adhere to the regulations and restriction when welding certain materials.

Electricity

Welders are susceptible to electric shocks if they do not follow correct procedure. When working with equipment make sure everything is safe, grounded and do not touch any electrodes with bare hands or two electrified parts.

Gases and Fumes

Welding fumes are toxic. Do not breathe them in. Always wear the appropriate safety equipment. Wear personal protection equipment (PPE). Always work in a well-ventilated space. Be sure you understand the properties of the material you are working with.

Welding Safety

Always weld with safety in the forefront of your thoughts and actions. Welders need to make certain they provide themselves and their fellow employees with a safe and healthy workplace. One simple welding mistake in a Minneapolis shop cost you or others their health or, worse still, their lives.
