Common Mistakes When Using Plate Lifting Clamps

by | May 8, 2017 | Industrial Supplier

Lifting steel plate or beams can be particularly problematic because of the size and shape of the material and the traditional lifting options. Instead, using specialized plate lifting clamps can provide a safe, effective and easy to use option, to lift these type of objects.

Using plate lifting clamps does require some special considerations. Some are very similar to other types of hooks and devices while others are unique to this specific type of lift. To help avoid common mistakes, here are some of the more problematic and what can be done to make the lift safer and more effective.

Check the Specs

As with any equipment used on a hoist or lift, it will be essential to make sure each component has a sufficient working load limit. For the plate clamps, it will typically be provided on the clamp and will list the working load limit as a weight. This may be in pounds or kilograms, so be sure to check to avoid errors in choosing the incorrect size.

Additionally, makes sure that the design is correct for the type of lift required. Typical plate lifting clamps will be designed to lift vertical, horizontal or in both directions with a special clamp developed for lifting beams.

Check the Clamp

Before using any clamp or lifting device makes sure to complete a visual inspection. Makes sure the jaws of the clamp open and close and that there are no visible signs of wear or damage to the clamp.

Another essential check is to make sure that the clamp has not been modified in any way. Welding or heating the clamp to make modifications can change the strength of the alloy, resulting in a clamp that is no longer capable or safe to use at the specific working load limit that is indicated on the clamp.
