Commercial Cleaning Products are Killing Our Fish and Wildlife

Traditional household cleaning products leave toxic residues that affect our health, pollute the air, and contaminate our water resources. Our homes may be clean, but we have created a toxic planet.

Toxic Chemicals

The cleaning substances that we use every day are turning up in our lakes, rivers, and oceans where they negatively impact not only the quality of our water supply but also the aquatic life. The U.S. is a major contributor to water pollution. Most of this pollution is from the chemicals washed down the drains of our homes. The commercial cleaning products we use is contaminating our drinking water with toxic chemicals are carcinogens.

These products get whisked away into our sewers, lakes, rivers, and aqueducts causing algae to bloom and other environmental problems. Environmental scientists have determined that about 400 of the 30,000 chemicals washed down our drains resist breaking down our treatment plants and filter out to our watersheds causing damage to local fish and wildlife populations.

The combination of chemicals is causing the heat to beat slower and slower in fish embryos resulting in heart deformities and early death in many aquatic species. In addition, Loggerhead turtles are accumulating toxins because they eat filter feeders such as mussels that remove contaminants from the water. The turtles are showing signs of liver disease and impaired ability to reproduce.
