Lens Replacement and Cataract Surgery: A Patient’s Guide

by | Feb 16, 2019 | Eye surgery

Most people develop cataracts later in life. Cataract surgery can effectively restore vision for these patients, but many people don’t know what it involves the products used or the likelihood of needing post-cataract glasses.

What does cataract surgery involve?

Cataract surgery requires replacing the cloudy lens in your eye with a clear, artificial one. Your surgeon will make a small incision in the eye, through which they will remove the natural lens and insert a synthetic lens implant in its place.

The operation is usually an outpatient procedure and takes around 35-40 minutes. Following surgery, you should be able to see clearly, and colors should appear more vivid.

Will I need post-cataract glasses?

Whether you require post-cataract glasses and the type of prescription you will need will depend on the type and strength of replacement lens you choose.

Your overall eye health, the type of lens used in your procedure, and your sensitivity to light may also affect whether you need glasses following surgery. Your eye doctor can advise whether you are likely to need post-cataract glasses.

Intraocular lenses

Intraocular lenses, otherwise known as IOLs, are used to replace the eye’s natural lens during cataract surgery. Opting for a standard monofocal IOL typically means you will require post-cataract glasses for reading or using a computer.

Meanwhile, multifocal IOLs enable the patient to focus at multiple distances, meaning you are less likely to need post-cataract glasses. However, some patients do find they need a mild near-vision prescription for viewing fine print up close.

Light sensitivity

A common side effect of cataract surgery is increased light sensitivity because your cataract is no longer diffracting the light as it enters your eye. For some people, the reintroduction of focused light can feel uncomfortable.

If you are finding it difficult to adjust to this renewed brightness after your operation, you may want to consider post-cataract glasses with either a light tint or photochromatic lenses that darken automatically in sunlight.

How do I purchase post-cataract glasses?

You can purchase glasses as normal from your local optician. Wait at least six weeks to fully heal from your surgery before you make an appointment to have your eyes tested for new glasses. Having an eye examination in the interim may result in the wrong prescription.

Cataract surgery is an effective method of improving your vision with a very low risk of complications. If you are interested in having cataract surgery, contact a trusted eye surgeon in your area to discuss your requirements.
