Are Big Band Vocalists Still Out There And Where To Find Them

by | Jul 14, 2015 | Arts And Entertainment

If you love the mix of Swing and jazz, you probably listen to Big Band vocalists. They were extremely popular from 1930 to about 1970 and then popularity died though Swing made a comeback in the late 1990s.

This type of musical ensemble originated in the US and typically included between 12 and 15 musicians, along with woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. Other terms that mean the same thing include jazz ensemble, jazz orchestra, and dance bands, among others.

Ensemble

The standard group consisted of a four-piece rhythm section that offered piano, guitar, acoustic or electric bass and drums, along with trombones, trumpets, and saxophones. While those instruments were standard, many bands brought in additional instruments whenever the mood struck. While they were considered a part of jazz, there was rarely any improvisation until the 1930s when they offered improv solos.

Variants

In many cases, there were 17 instruments, four trombones, four trumpets, five saxophones and four rhythm pieces. However, there were many times where 17 musicians couldn’t be found, especially during wars, so variations of the Big Band were used. For example, fewer players could be used, or more players could be involved, depending on who was available, and other instruments could be used, either in conjunction with the rest or instead of something. Popular variations include French horns, bass clarinet, accordion, banjo, and strings.

Music

While the music is still available on the radio and through various online options and CD, most people prefer to hear it in person. This can be exceptionally difficult because they aren’t popular anymore though vocalists can still sing along to the band’s recorded music.

Fall of Swing

Most people attribute the fall of Swing to the recording strike of 1942 though others claim it was the war. While they were still popular during WWII, most of the members of the bands had to go into the military and serve their country, meaning that at home there were fewer bands available. Even though Swing fell away as does many musical genres, it came back in the 1990s, and there are still many options currently.

Finding Them

It can be almost impossible to find and book these bands because there are only about 40 available throughout the world. However, because of recordings from the past, it is easy for singers to use recorded music and sing along. It gives you the sound and feel of the past with the present at a live event.

Big Band vocalists can be impossible to find, but visit Sylvia Brooks to find out how she may be able to help.
