Should You Use a Brush or Foam Roller for Painting?

If you have a painting project planned, you can choose from several types of painting tools. However, two of the most common tools used today are the brush and foam roller for painting . Here is a closer look at both options to help you decide which is best for you.

Brushes

Brushes have a long history of success. For example, many thousands of years ago, man used sticks to paint images on cave walls. Sticks are some of the earliest forms of brushes. In ancient Egypt, reeds with smashed ends were used to paint hieroglyphics. Brushes slowly evolved to leaves and then animal hair.

Brushes are good for painting small areas. For example, many artists use fine brushes to create landscapes which seemingly come alive on canvas. Today’s paint brushes are excellent for painting trim and hard to paint areas. Even though you can paint entire walls, it is time-consuming, and you may leave a lot of brush stroke marks in the paint.

Foam Roller for Painting

Do you have a large area to paint? If so, rollers are some of the best painting tools you can use. It is much quicker to use a foam roller for painting because they suck up a lot of paint and slowly release it when you press the roller to the wall and move it.

Ceilings

Did you ever try to paint a ceiling with a brush? If you attempt this task, you could easily get covered with paint. Paintbrushes are affected by gravity, and it is very easy to drip paint when you use a brush overhead. On the other hand, rollers lend themselves well to painting ceilings. The paint stays on the roller until you apply pressure. When loaded properly, rollers do not drip or leave any telltale signs of painting behind.
