Interior or exterior doors in a home can be finished in one of two ways. The first includes painting the door and the second includes buying stained doors or completing the staining yourself.
While painted doors have been all the rage for entrance doors for the last few years, there is a good case to be made for stained doors instead of painted doors. For the interior of the home the option to stain rather than paint also provides some important considerations.
Choosing a Door
If you buy a door, either interior or exterior, which is painted from the manufacturer, it is most likely a paint grade door if it is wood. This means the wood was not specifically selected for the uniformity in grain and color when the door was constructed as it was to be covered with paint.
Should you want to move from painted doors to stained doors you may be disappointed with the quality of the wood underneath. It will not look top quality if stripped, sanded and then stained.
All stained doors will be sold as natural wood doors to allow buyers to see the grain and color of the natural wood. Of course, with a top manufacturer they will custom stain and seal the door for your convenience before delivery.
Ease of Touch-ups
With a good quality wood and a top quality sealant and protective coat on interior or exterior stained doors, touch-ups will be simple and easy. A quick buffing and a bit of stain and sealant applied to the damaged area is all that is needed.
With painted doors over time the paint will fade slightly or may discolor due to chemicals, cleaners, exposure to high humidity or even to direct sunlight. When this happens touch-ups with paint will not blend, meaning the entire door has to be stripped, sanded and repainted to make the surface repair.
The other major factor to consider with stained doors is the versatility of natural wood and stain colors. These colors are designed to work with a wide range of different wall, flooring and window treatment color options, allowing maximum versatility in changing your home décor without having to paint or replace the doors to match.
With stained doors you can easily match trims or even use a contracting or different colored wood for walls, flooring or moldings to create a unique look. The options for design and decorating are virtually limitless when you choose stain over paint.
