If you’re looking to create a home theatre, whether it’s in a dedicated home theatre room or it’s a system that will be placed in the family room, the heart of any home theatre is going to be the AV receiver. These are devices that take audio as well as visual signals, reroute the signals to the necessary devices, such as a television or speakers, and in many cases, these systems also decode certain audio and video files to give you the best quality home theatre experience possible. However, if you’ve never had to purchase A/V Receivers before, there’s a few things you want to consider.
The first thing you want to do is find a receiver that has the proper connections for your speakers. If you’re looking for something to listen to music on, you’ll typically only need three speakers to connect with the receiver. This will be a left and a right channel speaker and perhaps a sub-woofer. If you’re looking for a home theatre experience you’ll want receivers that can connect anywhere from five, seven to up to nine speakers as well as 1 to 2 sub woofers to give you an entire surround sound experience.
You’ll also want to look at how much power the receiver uses per channel. Receivers typically offer anywhere from 80 watts per channel to upwards to 250. The more power delivered to individual channels means the louder the sound is going to be. However, you’ll also want to consider how much power capacity your speakers have to ensure that you don’t get a receiver that provides more power than your speakers can handle.
Lastly, you want to consider the cost. With A/V Receivers, you can purchase receivers that cost as little as $200 or you can purchase receivers that cost several thousand dollars. You’ll have to determine how much money you have to spend and look for receivers that meet all of your requirements while fitting into your budget.
While there are other things to consider with a home theatre system, to get your system started off on the right foundation, a quality audio and visual receiver is going to be the best purchase you can make. By taking a little time, determining your needs, comparing different brands and different features, you should be able to find a receiver that is going to work for your needs while fitting into your budget.
