Exploring 4 Types of Leveling Systems for Your RV

Finding it hard to sleep at night because of uneven RV floors? Waking up to a faulty refrigerator all because your RV leveling system failed while you were sleeping? Everybody knows gas fridges only work when they’re level after all. If you’re frustrated and don’t know what to do, here are some tips from RVRoadTrip on how you can level your motorhome.

  1. An affordable solution: A cheap way to get your RV level is to put a stack of 2×10 planks under the tires. Put as many as you need until the bubble on your level has centered itself. Many RV users opt for RV leveling blocks in this situation. These are plastic blocks that are cleaner and lighter than wooden planks, so they’re easy to pack along on the road. Their design allows you to snap the blocks together. All you have to do is simply snap the blocks together to build a ramp that’s tall enough to level off your RV. However, the downside to this option is that you’ll need to crawl underneath your RV every single time you need to level it off. That’s not exactly what you would call convenient.

  2. Use a leveling jack: If your camping spot is still a little rocky even after you’ve done your best to find even ground, no worries. Did you bring your stabilizer jacks? Then put them to good use. Don’t make the mistake of thinking you can use these jacks to keep the trailer elevated while you crawl under to change the tires. They’re built to level your RV, not lift it. Make sure you properly look after your jacks too. That way, you can use them on family vacations for years and years to come.

  3. Permanently mounted jacks: Here, RV scissor jacks are bolted or welded to the RV’s frame. When you need to level the motor home all you have to do is go around and hand crank the jacks that are already in place. If you’ve got crank-up jacks, you’ll need to make sure the jacks are regularly greased and cleaned. Because they hang underneath your RV, they quickly pick up dirt and debris from the road, hindering their ability to function properly.

  4. Hydraulic leveling systems: A hydraulic leveling system is basically an electrically operated jack that allows you to navigate tight spots and level off your RV. It can raise one side or your entire motorhome by using the hydraulic rams secured at the front and rear of your vehicle. You can also use this RV leveling system to change a tire. Make sure that there is enough fluid in the hydraulic reservoir before you operate your system.

Choose which option works best for your motorhome and budget. Be prepared for the tightest squeezes and the bumpiest campgrounds when you drive off into the sunset with your RV and brand new leveling system.
