Air conditioning is a must have-in the hot summer months, but there are times when an A/C unit stops functioning and has a problem. Here are some of the most common air conditioner problems:
Air Conditioner Has Faulty Wiring
If your air conditioning system was not installed properly, it could have bad or uncertified wiring. This not only keeps it from getting powered correctly, it could also cause a fire, so be sure only use certified A/C installers.
Low Refrigerant or Leaky Refrigerant Causes Problems
Air conditioners use some type of refrigerant, such as Freon, to cool the air. If the A/C unit is leaking, it will not cool things off and the Freon must be replaced, and the leak repaired. Some types of refrigerant are also being phased out, so know what you’re A/C unit uses.
Outside Fan Not Working
An A/C unit outside fan conveys the heat from your house to the outside, and if the fan there isn’t working then it won’t transfer the heat outside. This causes the compressor to overheat and shut down or can also damage the compressor.
A/C Has Frozen Coil
If the unit has a frozen coil, it likely has an airflow problem. This is usually caused by dirty air ducts or filters, but could also be due to low levels of refrigerant. Be sure to have annual maintenance to check on these issues.
Bad Compressor and Fan Controls Cause Issues
Compressor and fan controls may wear out, so they should be checked through a professional annual maintenance call.
Thermostat Sensor Not Working
Air conditioners use a thermostat sensor to measure the air temperature going into the evaporative coil. If it is broken, the A/C may cycle continually.
All in all, you should get you air conditioner checked out once a year right before summer to prevent these and other common issues. Also be sure to clean or change the air filter regularly as this can lead to a number of problems.
