LED technology has come a long way in recent years. Just a few years ago, in fact, a LED light bulb could cost upwards of $50, but today they are becoming cheaper and more accessible. With this increased accessibility, LED bulbs are naturally making their way into the flashlight market, but what advantages do these bulbs offer over traditional incandescent bulbs?
What’s So Great About LEDs?
Traditional incandescent light bulbs produce light by running electricity through a thin wire. Running electricity through this element superheats the wire and in turn, produces light. You will notice this requires the production of a lot of heat. This results in a massive amount of wasted energy that is released as heat. It can also cause the bulb to fail and explode of the element breaks and touches the glass when it is hot. Consider your typical incandescent, typically people use 60W bulbs. By comparison, most modern laptop power supplies are only 65W or less. You could power a laptop with the energy usage of a typical incandescent.
LED bulbs, on the other hand, work by using a cluster of small LED lights. These diodes are far more efficient than the superheated wire method of an incandescent. Typical 60W equivalent LED bulbs will use between 2 and 8 watts depending on the brand.
Longer Life
Everyone has had it happen, you get home from work and turn on the lights only to have the bulb blow. This is because incandescent bulbs typically only last a few months before burning through the wire element. LED bulbs, however, will never burn out like incandescent. They will slowly get dimmer over time and eventually stop producing light, but if used properly they will last for several years.
So, why should you pick up LED flashlights? Because they are brighter, more energy efficient, and last much longer than traditional incandescent. This technology is still improving, so expect new things out of the lighting industry in the future around LED technology.
