What You Need to Know About Drain Root Cutters

by | Apr 7, 2017 | Business

Drain root cutters are an important part of any drain tech’s arsenal. While most of your attention is likely to be on machines that clean drains, this is one attachment that should not be underestimated. If you are who have been cleaning drains for any length of time, you have likely come across roots blocking those sewer lines at one time or the other. So, what do you do?

When confronted with those stubborn roots, you have the option of either trying to force your way through, risking more damage to the line, or you could wisely use our root cutters to cut your way through.

Why Do You Need a Drain Root Cutter?

Tree roots naturally spread within the earth when trying to find new sources of water. If drain or sewer lines are in the vicinity, these roots are bound to find a way into them. The risk of this happening increases if you live in a dry area. It’s just Mother Nature at work, and something you cannot avoid.

If and when these roots continue to grow, they will block the flow of water and cause backups in the sewer line. This in turn will eventually lead to bigger issues like cracked pipes and overflows. To keep your customers happy, use a root cutter to remove the blockages before they have to spend money on costly and time-consuming line repairs or replacement. Chemical root cleaning solutions have their merits and could do the trick, but results are not guaranteed.

Drain root cutters can make your life (and your customers’ lives) easier by protecting the drain line from major damage by getting rid of the root obstructions in an efficient manner. Because the cutters utterly decimate the roots causing blockages, it will take a long time for the roots to grow back and start causing problems again.

How Does a Drain Root Cutter Work?

The drain root cutter is a blade attachment that goes with our line of manual drain cleaning cable machines. Lower the sewer cable with the root cutter into a drainpipe, and the blade cuts and tears away at any roots that it comes across. You may need to withdraw the cable and clean the roots off the blade after every few minutes so that it stays sharp. Repeat the process until the blockage is completely removed.

Attaching the blades to the cable machine is incredibly easy, regardless of which manufacturer’s cable you are using. Just place the blade holder onto the hex of the leader, put your choice of blade into the holder and secure. We recommend that you secure the blade as tightly as possible as vibration getting tangled in roots could make it fall off the cable.

We manufacture 10 different blade shapes, giving you the option to pick one that suits your requirements. Sizes range from 1 to 16 inches to fit into any drainpipe.
