The Importance of Shrink Wrap Equipment

by | Jun 14, 2017 | Packaging

Not long ago, many things came in cardboard containers, and brightly colored packages were uncommon. However, thanks to modern-day shrink wrap equipment, you can create some of the most attractive products on the market and protect them from all kinds of problems. Here are some important reasons to choose this technology for your business.

How Does it Work?

Thanks to special technology, you can buy poly film that shrinks when heated. Shrink wrap came into existence in the 1980s for wrapping and securing boats. In time, the technology spread to include many items. There are two types of poly films used for shrinking, mono-directional and unidirectional. The mono-directional film only shrinks in a single direction while unidirectional film shrinks both ways.

To create a poly film for shrink wrap equipment, manufacturers stretch the film after warming it. When it cools off, it retains the stretched shape. However, once re-heated it returns to its original shape before stretching. That is what causes the film to shrink. This is possible because the poly film has a unique molecular structure. Originally, the molecules have no specific patterns until you apply heat and stretch the film. This aligns the molecules to a new shape, and when cooled, they maintain that shape. Yet, once re-heated, molecules return to their original shape, and this is what causes the shrinkage.

Applications

Shrink wrap equipment can wrap both small and large items. Here are some of the things you can wrap this way today:

 * Tamper-proof packaging – creates excellent tight-fitting seals over bottle caps.

 * DVDs and CDs – seals and protects against moisture

 * Boats

 * Helicopters

 * Large equipment

 * Scaffolds

 * Palletized materials
