With several different options in welding methods and technology available for most projects, choosing the one that is both cost-effective as well as producing the best possible weld are the two most important decisions for any OEM to consider.
One of the most effective options for welding a wide variety of metals and alloys is TIG welding. TIG or tungsten inert gas welding is also known as GTAW or gas tungsten arc welding. A TIG welding service should be able to assist the OEM in determining if this is the best option for their welding requirements.
As a general guideline, the TIG welding service is recommended when the following issues are a factor for the project. It is relevant to keep in mind that GTAW can be a manual as well as an automated or robotic type of welding process.
Precision Requirement for the Weld
The more precise the weld must be, the greater the benefit of selecting a TIG welding service. This is a highly precise welding operation when done through experienced TIG welders or correctly configured automated welding systems.
In addition to the precision of the weld, TIG welding also provides high purity welds. These “clean” welds are important in many types of processes and are critical in preventing corrosion at and around the site of the weld.
Ideally, TIG welding should only be considered on new metals and alloys that have been thoroughly cleaned to remove grease, deposits, or any areas of surface corrosion. Using TIG welding on old or dirty surfaces results in a higher risk of weld failure in the future.
