Electro nickel plating, also called nickel electroplating, is becoming a more commonly used production method. This technique involves coating a conductive surface, usually metal, with a thin nickel coating using an electrical current.
How the Process Works
To successfully transfer nickel to another surface, a negative charge must be supplied to the base material. A conductive wire is used to connect the product to a power source. A nickel rod is then linked to the positive side of the power source similarly.
Once the above steps are done, the base material is then placed into a nickel chloride salt and water solution. The electric current that is passing through the specialized solution causes the nickel chloride salt to separate into positive and negative ions. A chemical reaction then causes the nickel to dissolve into the solution, where it becomes oxidized. The oxidized nickel then coats the product as it’s attracted to the base material in the solution.
Benefits of Nickel Electroplating
One of the greatest things about nickel electroplating is its ability to improve various characteristics that might not be present in the base material. For example, this process can improve a surface’s ability to resist corrosion. It can also improve hardness and provide additional strength. Nickel electroplating also improves a material’s resistance to wear and tear and improves its ductility. Finally, nickel electroplating can improve the surface material’s appearance as during the electroplating process. Different chemicals can be added to provide various finishes.
