Be Sure to Get Your Heater Checked This Winter

The weather is only going to get chillier from this point onward, so it’s an absolute imperative to get your furnace checked. Yearly inspections are a must for both heating and cooling systems – especially in the winter season, as temperatures can get critical.

It isn’t uncommon for furnaces to suffer from neglect throughout the year. While some may completely stop functioning before winter begins, others may only function marginally, leading to a loss of heat and a loss of money that no one can afford during the busy holidays.

A heating system is built in a very simple combination of three parts – the heat source (that is, the furnace), a distribution system (usually an integrated vent within the home’s walls) and finally, a thermostat for easy regulation. Any one of these three can malfunction – and there are a few ways you can check for any risks without having to call a repair service. Heating tune up isn’t costly, however, and should definitely be a considered option when and if an issue arises.

First on Your List
The first thing to check is the furnace itself. Is it connected to power? If you’re having trouble turning your furnace on, you may have some damaged electronics – a blown fuse or something else. In that case, it’s wise to call a professional.

Check the Distribution System
If the problem isn’t with the furnace, then your distribution system may be at fault. The ducts could be clogged with something, or there could be a leak somewhere in the ducts causing lost heat. Dirt removal and lubrication should be routine – at least annual – procedures when dealing with furnaces and a comprehensive heating tune up. Neglecting to clean and lubricate your heating system will cause it to rapidly deteriorate.

Why You Should Clean the Filter, Drain
Cleaning out the furnace’s condensate drain and filter can also help reduce inefficiency. Changing a furnace’s air filter at least four times a year is recommended, states the EPA. Not only is a clogged air filter hazardous to the environment, but it’s also dangerous to your health.

A furnace tune-up is about more than just cleaning, though. Companies like DC Cheek undergo intensive safety checks and tests to make sure that there are no leakages of fuel or carbon monoxide – an incredible safety hazard – and that the electrical components are working properly. A comprehensive cleaning of the distribution system and checking of the thermostat will also help reveal other furnace inefficiencies.
