Eating Disorders Affecting Millions of Teens

It is unfortunate how many people are affected by one form or more forms of an eating disorder. While many people immediately may think about those that are too skinny, there are people that suffer with obesity as well – and that is still an eating disorder. The media has such a strong pull over many and over the years, has made society jaded and set unnatural standards of living for themselves – especially around the Los Angeles area. An eating disorder tends to be most prevalent in young women, but it really can affect anyone. Generally, those that do suffer from an eating disorder started developing poor habits when they were young and either the issues magnified as they aged, or the extremes went a little further as time progressed.

Many Lose Control

Other than poor health and all other issues associated with an eating disorder, it is scary how controlling they are over one’s psyche and body. While a simple diet to shed a few pounds is not unhealthy, many people are taking it entirely way to far, either the expectations or goals that they set for themselves. One cannot just simply continue to consume mass amounts of calories and not think that it is not doing any bodily harm and vice versa; one simply cannot starve themselves or put themselves on crash diets and expect to be healthy.

Addressing All Issues

Generally when it comes to different eating disorders, there is some psychosocial problems as well that need to be thoroughly addressed .That is why seeking help from a professional treatment center is strongly suggested so they can gather all the proper information and create a plan to follow. A historical background is necessary because some personal issues may be genetic, and it is most important that the counselors/doctors fully assess each patient. Not all treatment plans will be the same for individuals even if they are experience similar problems through their eating disorder. Not everyone reacts the same way or handles things the same way, and this holds true for people’s bodies, physically, as well.

It is not uncommon for those with an eating disorder to feel and go through many different emotions. Partially some of this is directly caused by the lack of or overdoing of food consumption – the body just requires certain balance of nutrients and vitamins to stay healthy and function properly. If you or a loved one is struggling with an eating disorder, it is all right – you are never alone and there are numerous people ready to help.
