The role of a tension transducer in web tension control systems is critical. This is the device that is responsible for converting the movement in the load cell caused by changes in web tension to an electronic signal that is then transmitted, sometimes with amplification, to a digital or analog readout.
In many new systems, this information is transmitted to a digital readout that may be located on the equipment or at a remote location. At the same time, it will also be used to control the equipment to automatically adjust and maintain the web tension within the optimal range for the equipment and the application.
Care and Maintenance
As with any electro-mechanical device that is designed for these demanding applications, manufacturers build in specific features that add to the durability of the tension transducer. These devices are often exposed to heat, vibration and dust and debris during operation.
Always take the time to review the installation instructions for any transducer. This is particularly true if you are changing brands or options in transducers. By following the manufacturer’s installation instructions, there is less chance of problems once installed.
Don’t Overload
A very real issue that can shorten the life of any tension transducer is choosing the incorrect size and capacity of load cell and transducer for the specific equipment and system. All of these systems are rated for their specific weight range.
It is important not to consider the average weight that will be on the load cell and transducer, but the upper and lower extremes. The upper extreme for weight is particularly critical as it can create issues with the load cell that also impact the ability of the transducer to make the conversion and provide the accurate change in voltage to be read through the system.
