Important Information to Know About 304 Stainless Steel Sheet Metal

by | Oct 5, 2015 | Metal

Stainless steels are iron alloys (low-carbon steels) that contain at least 10.5 percent of chromium. Chromium is added to give steel ample strength and corrosion resistant properties. Other metals added to stainless steel to improve its structure and properties, such as formability and cryogenic toughness, are titanium, nickel, copper and molybdenum. There are more than 24 grade of stainless steel. The most commonly used grade is the 304/304L. 304 and 304L stainless steel sheets are part of the austenitic family of stainless steel. They are used in a wide range of applications, such as food processing and handling, architectural, conveyors, chemical process vessels and heat exchangers. Here are some important details to know about 304 Stainless Steel Sheet Metal.

Welding of 304 Stainless Steels

The 304 stainless steel sheets are considered one of the most weldable steel alloys. They can be welded by resistance welding and all fusion welding processes. The two important factors to take into account when producing weld joint in 304 stainless steel sheets are the avoidance of cracking and preservation of corrosion resistance. To minimize cracking susceptibility, small amounts of ferrite are added to the 304 and 304L alloys to allow then to solidify fast.

Heat Treatment

The 304 and 304L stainless steel alloys are treated with heat to allow the precipitated chromium carbides to dissolve and avoid cold forming effects. The commonly used heat treatment method is the anneal heat treatment, which is carried out at a temperature range of 1850 to 2050°F. To prevent precipitation of chromium carbides, the cooling of anneal should be between 1500 to1800° F.

Applications of 304/304L Stainless Steel Metals

304/304L Stainless Steel Metals are mostly used for parts requiring grinding, welding, machining and polishing. They are used where good mechanical properties and corrosion resistance are primary requirements. 304/304L Stainless Steel Metals are widely accepted in a variety of industries such as beverage, dairy, and other food industries where the highest degree of sanitation and cleanliness.

These are just some important details to know about 304 Stainless Steel Sheet Metal. For additional information about quality 304/304L Stainless Steel Metals and how to contact a reputable metal supplier. You can also connect with them on Facebook.
