Industrial Floor Coating: Understanding The Basics

by | Jul 22, 2015 | Flooring

As a home owner, you are aware of the amount of abuse you and your family, pets and friends can subject your floor to. Yet, what you do can be as nothing when compared to that facing concrete industrial floors. This is one major reason why companies and business take certain measures to prolong the life and quality of their floors. This is why those who are aware of the problems that face their concrete floors, insist on the application of industrial floor coatings.

Why Apply Industrial Floor Coatings?

In industry, floors are subjected to about any form of treatment or mistreatment. This includes:

  1. The impact of falling or even placed objects on the surface

  2. Abrasion

  3. Attacks from spilled or dropped chemicals

  4. Heavy traffic from equipment and employees

  5. Spills of a variety of substances including harsh chemicals and water

The problem is concrete is a porous substance. When abused and overused, they can do one of several things. They can crack. They can also result in dust rising into the air. Corrosive materials can also bite chunks out of the unprotected concrete flooring. Such reactions can result in unhealthy consequences. Industrial floor coatings are meant to solve these problems.

Types of Industrial Floor Coatings

Industrial floor coatings are not a homogenous system. They need to relate to the specific type of industry as well as to the legal requirements of the company and production methods. Essentially, however, specifics aside, there are two basic types of industrial floor coatings. These are epoxy and urethane.

Epoxy Industrial Floor Coatings

Epoxy starts off as a melted resin. It is then smoothly spread over a surface that is either sand-blasted or pre-sanded. An example of this type of industrial floor coating is quartz aggregate epoxy. Epoxy industrial floor coatings can be found in a myriad of colors and combinations. They are perfect for adding an aesthetic surface appeal to what is a functional and very practical floor.

Urethane Industrial Floor Coatings

The same process that is used for epoxy is employed for urethane industrial floor coatings. They are described, however, as more bouncy than their epoxy counterpart. It provides more give or flexibility and, as a result, is more popular for such things as tennis or basketball courts. Overall, it is favored where back concerns are an issue but the flooring still needs to be hard and durable.

Like epoxy, such industrial floor coatings can be purchased in a variety of colors and thicknesses. They can be solid or mixed providing an elegant appearance for a practical surface covering.
