Prepare for the Zombie Apocalypse

There is no zombie apocalypse, but it got your attention didn’t it? The truth of the matter is that you never quite know when disaster might strike. Whether it is an emergency lockdown because of an active terror situation or a natural disaster that cuts off the power for an extended period of time, it is critical to have emergency survival gear on hand in case you can’t immediately get to a safe refuge. What do you need for survival?

Waterproofing

Wet materials do no good in natural disasters. Therefore, it is essential to do some simple waterproofing of emergency items as well as important documents, such as birth certificates, passports or even important photographs. You can easily prepare emergency survival gear by purchasing either ordinary freezer bags or airtight metal tins, such as cookies’ or mint tins’.

Illumination

Extended power outages mean little to no light when the sun goes down. After finding your waterproof materials, you now need things to place in them. One crucial item is some sort of luminary device. Whether it is flashlight or candles, you should have something that will light the way. Many stores that sell wilderness or camping supplies offer extended burning lights.

Fire Starting

If you are without power for a significant amount of time, you will eventually need to think of building a fire, not only to generate heat and illumination but also for basic cooking, bathing, and sterilizing water. In order to build a fire, you should have some sort of fire starter such as matches, lighters or magnesium flints. Again, stores that sell camping equipment or emergency survival gear have fire starter kits.

You can never know when disaster is going to strike. There may not ever be a zombie apocalypse, but there are other disasters to consider, such as flash floods, electrical storms or harsh winter storms that can knock out power for days at a time. Rather than be reactive and scramble, it is always prudent to be proactive and prepare.
