Save money with a new shower

Most people know that showers are much more cost-effective and environmentally sound than baths. A shower typically uses less water, and it costs less to heat. If you don’t have a shower in your home, it’s worth considering installing one. You’ll see your monthly electricity and water bills going down, especially if you’re in Hemel Hempstead and have a water meter. And, if you have a large family, everyone can get clean much faster, so there’s less competition for the bathroom. Teenagers in particular often prefer baths to showers, so it can be a subtle way to deal with those unspoken hygiene issues too!

However, even if you have a shower in place, you may be able to benefit from a new, more efficient shower. Talk to a expert plumber about your options.

Save water and energy with low flow showers

Low flow shower heads are designed to use less water than standard shower heads. They can reduce your water consumption by up to 60%. A typical ten-minute shower takes around 50 gallons of water. That’s much better than a bath, which uses 70 gallons or more, but a low flow head can cut that to 25 gallons. If you’ve got four people in your house, showering daily, that adds up to around three thousand gallons of water a month you’re saving – or over thirty-five thousand gallons a year! If you’re paying for metered waste water as well, that’s a double saving.

Low flow showers still have plenty of power behind them, so you will still get the same effect as a regular power shower if you want. From a consumption point of view, they’re much better than standard power showers which often use more water than a bath.

And, of course, if you’re using less water, you’re using less energy to heat it, so you’re saving even more money. Studies show that you can expect to recoup the cost of a low flow shower head within a couple of months. If you use a plumber in Hemel Hempstead to install it, it’ll cost you a little more, but the savings will still be obvious right away.

General shower tips

* Don’t leave your razors in the shower. The blades get dull and they won’t last as long.

* Save even more water with the “navy shower”. Get nicely wet, then turn the water off while you apply soap all over. Then turn the water back on to rinse off. This can save as much as 20 gallons each time you shower – add that up over a month!

* Wash the shower curtain regularly. Mould and mildew can build up in damp conditions, and that’s a health hazard.

* Make sure your shower room is well ventilated. Steam can damage the walls and ceiling.
