The 6 Steps to Recovery

by | Oct 2, 2015 | Alcohol and Drug Testing

There are six main steps that are involved in the alcohol or drug recovery process. Below, we will go over what each of these steps are.

Realizing the Problem

The first step is to identify that you actually have a problem. A lot of people with addictions believe that they have control of it when the truth is they do not. If you can accept that you have an addiction and you cannot control it, you will be able to begin the process of recovery. Identifying that you have a problem is the first step you need to take in order to begin making the change to break your addiction.

Choosing the Right Treatment Option

There are three main treatment options that you can enter. These options are inpatient recovery, outpatient recovery or entering the 12 step program. You should read up on each of these options to decide which the best choice is for you.

Accept Support from Friends and Family

The road to recovery is long and difficult. It is not something that can easily be done alone. Ensuring that you have the support of your friends and family will go a long way in helping you stick with your recovery.

Controlling Your Sobriety

Once you have a handle on your sobriety, you will have to focus on controlling it. Identify any triggers that may encourage you to fall off the wagon and practice maintaining your sobriety through them. Take part in aftercare programs to help you do this.

Practice New Habits

One of the ways that you can ensure that you will remain sober after you recover from your addiction is to change your habits. You should distance yourself from any bad influences that may encourage you to begin your drug or alcohol addiction again. Try to add new hobbies that will keep you busy and get use to taking advantage of the resources that the Malibu Alcohol Rehab Center will provide for you.

Don’t Give up When You Relapse

It is very possible to experience a relapse during your recovery. The most important thing when this happens is to not give up. If you relapse, do everything you can to get back on track to continue your recovery. The worst thing you can do after relapse is to give up. You will quickly spiral back to where you started and have to restart the recovery process all over again if you do this.
