Do you own a four wheel drive vehicle? Are you frequently off the beaten path and four wheeling in all kinds of places? If so, you should consider special tires and rims for you SUV or truck. In fact, you’ll find many benefits to buying off road wheels and tires, and there are several basic styles to consider.
Made for the Job
Off road tires and rims are specially designed to take all the punishment you are going to give them. Just about any kind of stock wheels will hold up under local road and highway driving conditions. However, when you are in mud, jumping ravines, and rolling over some of the roughest terrain, you need something which is ultra strong and delivers peak performance when you need it.
One Piece Off Road Wheels
One piece rims are simple in construction and cast from a single mold. Because the rim and center cap are one piece, this creates a very strong and dependable wheel. A one piece wheel is stiffer than wheels made from two or three pieces and this is good for performance. For example, there is little performance deformation (buckling, twisting, or warping) and this helps to transmit more power to the vehicle.
Two Piece Off Road Wheels
A two piece rim has two separate sections, the center, and the rim. Both wheel sections are securely bolted together. This is often used to make intricate wheel designs not possible with single piece wheels.
Replacement cost is usually lower with two piece wheels. For example, during your off road adventures you could damage a rim but the center section may be intact, so you only need to replace the rim section.
Three Piece Rims
A 3 piece wheel includes an inner barrel, outer barrel, and center piece. All 3 pieces are bolted together. This design is perfect for 2 or 3 tone finishes. In addition, they are stronger than many cast wheels.
Deep Dish Wheels
This design has the center piece offset from the rim section, and is often used to provide a customized look. Offset or deep dish rims are very popular and you may need special tires and installation when you choose off road wheels.
Forged Wheels
Most alloy wheels are cast into one piece, by pouring molten metal into a mold. However, forging is something different. The process of forging produces a wheel by forcing a block of metal alloy into a specific shape. It is not melted first. This creates one of the strongest wheels you can make, and at the same time, these wheels are very light. Lighter off road wheels can deliver better fuel economy and performance.
