So, you have decided to take the next step to better health and start a workout program. You have even decided that joining a gym is better for you than trying to work out at home, because you have done the research and discovered that gym members are much more likely to actually work out than non-gym members. However, you are still struggling with how to pick the fitness center that is right for you.
While we cannot tell you what kind of gym is right for you, we can tell you the things to consider when looking for a gym.
- What is your price point? Gym memberships run the gamut from exceedingly expensive to very affordable? What can you afford? Knowing this ahead of time is important, because you should not even look at any gyms that are outside of your price range. Some very expensive facilities are extremely fancy, and the amenities that they offer, some of which have nothing to do with actually working out, can make them seem more appealing for all the wrong reasons. So, figure out what you can comfortably spend on a gym membership and immediately cross of anything out of your price range.
- What type of atmosphere do you want? Are you looking to become a bodybuilder, do you want a place where you can work out without interacting with other people, do you want classes, do you want a supportive team-environment? If your gym has an atmosphere that makes you feel uncomfortable, you are going to avoid it, so consider the atmosphere when you pick a gym.
- Where is it located? Your gym should be close to your home or your work, depending on when you think you will work out. If you have to go out of your way to get to the gym, you are going to find excuses not to go. So, look for fitness centers that are an easy commute.
- Does it offer nutritional support and personal training? You may not want these services, but both are proven to help people maintain fitness programs. If you decide you want them, are they available through the gym? If not, does the gym have a policy prohibiting personal trainers from coming to the facility with you?
