Most freight transport companies are limited to what jobs they can take based on the equipment size and availability. Heavy haul trailers are a common factor that limits a company’s ability to effectively deliver goods, but there are many companies out there that will work with one another in order to provide their customers with the services they need. There are many different trailer and axle combinations available to their clients.
Axle Types
There are seven different axle types for heavy haul trucking. These are five, six, seven, eight, ten, thirteen and nineteen. Specific axles exist for custom equipment and highly diversified hauling companies. Every axle category is split up depending on the number of wheels that are attached to the engine and the trailer both. In general, the higher the axle count, the more weight the truck is able to support. Fewer trailer configurations are available when more axles are used and more engine power is required, too.
Trailer Types
There are five different main trailer types available to you.
There are flatbeds, which are the most common type of heavy haul trucking trailer. These are open, flat beds that provide many different ways to attach equipment and even attach tarp systems to cover equipment. They are beneficial because they can be loaded from all sides of the trailer, making then easy to use.
Step decks are also known as drop decks. These are flatbeds that have two tiers. Two beds are used when the standard flatbed is not usable because of straight height regulations. These are most commonly used to haul vehicles.
Stretch trailers are also known as extendable flatbeds. When loads are too long to use the standard length trailers, such as long steel beams for construction, then the extendable trailer will accommodate the extra length. Construction materials or anything else that hangs off the end of the trailer is not able to be supported. The maximum weight that is allowable for these types is usually a little less than other trailer types.
Double drop trailers are common when oversized materials need to be hauled. They have a lower deck that transports goods that stand taller than ten feet. The middle section of this type of trailer, also known as the well, is the longest part and will secure the freight.
RGNs are also known as removable goosenecks. They let employees load construction equipment by driving it onto the trailer bed. These haul very heavy loads, typically up to 150,000 pounds. They are expensive trailers, but they are very useful for enormous jobs, such as mining equipment. There are also RGN stretch trailers that are available for the largest jobs. Both types require a large number of axles.
Your hauling company will be able to determine what type of equipment it needs to haul your goods from destination to destination in the most efficient manner.
