To check the TPR valve, turn off the cold water supply valve and the power to the water heater. Put a bucket directly under the pipe that runs down the side of the water heater’s tank. The TPR valve will be on the side or top of this pipe. Lift the valve a little, so water starts coming out, and then immediately let go.
If the water stops coming out, the valve is still good. If it continues to flow, the valve needs to be replaced.
