Over time, all water heaters will need to be replaced, as they can only operate efficiently for so long. However, as homeowners, we want to ensure that we are getting the most out of our water heater. Here are some of the best water heater maintenance tips from Venice plumbing companies. Following these tips doesn’t guarantee that your water heater won’t need to be replaced, but they will help ensure it operates efficiently and effectively for years to come.
Check the TPR Valve
To check the TPR valve, turn off the cold water supply valve and the power to the water heater. Put a bucket directly under the pipe that runs down the side of the water heater’s tank. The TPR valve will be on the side or top of this pipe. Lift the valve a little, so water starts coming out, and then immediately let go.
If the water stops coming out, the valve is still good. If it continues to flow, the valve needs to be replaced. While the homeowner themselves can do this, it is also something professionals at Babe’s Plumbing Inc can easily handle. If you are unsure of how to check it or replace it, always call in a professional.
Wash Out the Sediment
Over time, sediment builds up and collects at the bottom of your water heater. Venice plumbing companies will tell you that every six months or so, you should drain the water out of your tank and clean out the sediment. To do that, hook a hose up to the drainpipe at the bottom of the tank and allow the water to drain out.
Turn on the cold water supply for a few minutes and then shut it off to stir up the sediment. Drain the newly added water into a bucket. Continue doing this until clear water comes out of the hose. For more information contact us.
