The Best Local Veterinarians Want Your Best Friend To Live Long And Stay Healthy

by | Jul 3, 2015 | Animal Helath

The most important job of the best local veterinarians is to keep their patients healthy, whether they happen to be dogs, cats, birds or iguanas. Of course, most of the time people bring their pets to the vet because they are ill or need vaccinations. However, regular check-ups, particularly with the same vet, can often identify problems while they are small and treatable. This saves money over time – big problems cost a lot more to treat than small ones.

How Often Should A Dog or Cat Visit the Vet?
Cat, particularly, are not usually thrilled to be loaded into a cat carrier and taken to the vet, but they still need regular check-ups. As a general rule, unless the animal is sick, it’s recommended that the animal receive a check-up once a year if less than 10 years old and twice a year if older than 10. Many dogs and cats will “hide” health problems from us until the condition has become serious. For a dog or cat, 1 year equals 7 human years, so if they go 2 years between vet visits, that would be the same as you not seeing a doctor for 14 years!

Signs of a Possible Problem
When the vet has seen the pet previously, then changes between visits are easier to spot. Some of the changes that a vet would look for include:

  • Losing or gaining weight and appetite changes;
  • Drinking more or less water;
  • Bumps, rashes or lumps on the skin;
  • Dental problems, especially if the animal seems to be having difficulty chewing;
  • Changes in agility or difficulty walking;
  • Attitude (especially increased irritability or lethargy);
  • An unusual odour;
  • Changes in “bathroom” behaviour.

When You Need an Emergency Vet Visit
Emergencies happen. In these instances, you need to take your animal friend to your best local veterinarians immediately.

  • Trauma from an accident or fight with another animal;
  • Seizures or difficulty breathing;
  • Sudden weakness or lethargy;
  • Vomiting, diarrhea or known exposure to toxins;
  • Hard, distended abdomen;
  • Vision or hearing problems;
  • Difficulty giving birth.
