What It Takes to Develop Perforated Metal Panels

A large number of industries take advantage of perforated metal panels for both functional and aesthetic purposes. The idea of perforating metal panels in order to serve a particular purpose is a process that began over 150 years. As both the manufacturing industry and technology advances, so did the processes of making metal panels.

Perforated metal panels can use a variety of metals as their base. Commonly used materials include copper, metal alloys, aluminum, titanium, brass, stainless teel, cold rolled steel, and galvanized steel. The process of developing perforated metal plates began over 150 yrs. What was once a slow and methodical process has evolved into a method that incorporates more modern technology and methods.

Development Processes

Once upon a time, these items were developed in a time intensive and rudimentary process. Though very labor intensive, it was very functional. However, the value chain has changed as well as the manufacturing industry. What was a hammer and nail process now uses a variety of methods depending on the desired end product.

Pinned Rotary Wheels

One of the most popular methods used today involves pinned rotary wheels. As the wheels rotate they pinch holes in metal sheets to achieve the desired pattern. These needles are often heated so that in essence the holes are cleanly implanted into the metal sheets.

Die and Punch Method

Another process that is also commonly used involves a die and punch method. Nails are punched into metal to form a pattern. When the metal sheet is punched this process leaves a metal flap on other side. These are shaved off as the metal is buffed. This is a time efficient process.

Though it costs more to utilize lasers, this is a highly accurate way to develop an intended pattern on a sheet of metal. The designs are usually more refined and precise.

There are a variety of industries that utilize perforated metal panels. These versatile items can be used for a number of purposes. A few of the industries to which they can be applied, include food and beverage, automotive, chemical, energy, architecture, construction and acoustic.
