How Do Air Compressors in PA Work?

by | Nov 3, 2016 | Air Quality

Air compressors provide power solutions in a wide range of commercial and manufacturing situations, and with modern models built in a variety of sizes to handle every job these days, they’re even finding their way into many home workshops and garages. This is unsurprising given they can be used for everything from inflating air mattresses and pool toys to providing a power source for tools like drills, nail guns, impact wrenches, and spray guys. Instead of each tool relying on its own motor for power, which can be inconvenient, all of these can be run by an air compressor. This allows tools to be designed in a more compact, durable, and easy to use way. But how do Air Compressors in PA work?

The most common type of air compressor used by contractors, mechanics, woodworkers, and home handymen is a positive displacement compressor. In these, the air is pressurized by forcing it into an extremely small containing space and is used to run a reciprocating piston. Using either an electric or gas motor to run the crankshaft and keep the air at the right pressure, these compressors functionally resemble small internal combustion engines.

Some articulated piston compressors require oil lubrication for the bearings and cylinder. This can lead to a small amount of oil getting into the air, although this is not in and of itself a problem. Most tools can benefit from the small amount of oil, although there are some situations that require oil free air and in these circumstances, this type of compressor is not appropriate. The major down side, however, is that models that use oil lubrication require periodic oil changes and regular maintenance. Those who frequently use tools or work under circumstances where there cannot be even the smallest amount of oil in the air should instead look into compressors that use permanently lubricated bearings, removing the need for oil entirely.

Circumstances that require only a modest amount of compressed air may be better met using a diaphragm compressor. Diaphragm compressors contain a membrane that seals the compression chamber off and ensures that no air will leak out.
