Preparing Your Little One For Big Change

by | Jul 16, 2019 | Preschool

A major milestone in every child’s life, kindergarten can be both exciting and stressful for kids and parents alike. At Turtle Creek Learning Academy, we are as invested in your little one’s education as heartily as you are, and endeavour to make the experience a success for your entire family. To this end, we are happy to offer the following tips to help ease your child’s transition into the school melee:

Establish A Bedtime Routine

Just like an adult, a full night’s rest will have a direct impact on your child’s success at school. Limit TV hours, have dinner as a family, allow for playtime in the bath, and read or sing together as you tuck her into bed. By establishing a routine, your child will more easily fall asleep, allowing her to be fully rested for each new day with her peers.

Encourage Independence

Especially if this is her first time away from home, your child may struggle with her newfound independence beyond your watching eye. Regardless of whether she attends a full- or half-day program, her ability to adapt to a new environment will have a lasting impact on autonomy as she ages. Of course, this may also be your first time without her too, and you may find that the transition is tough on you both. If so, consider hiring a babysitter or arranging play dates to help the entire family adjust to the change.

Practice School-Time Skills

From reading and writing to math and social skills, the home environment affords a perfect opportunity for little ones to practice the lessons they are learning in school. Engage in parent-child activities to reinforce class-time exercises, and promote self-learning with independent projects. Be willing to answer questions that your child has about school, and let her pick out her own materials (within reason!) to encourage self-expression.
