Safety Procedures to Follow When a Leakage is Suspected in the Gas-Fired Boilers

by | Sep 7, 2015 | Heating & Air Conditioning

Gas is a common fuel for boiler systems. The gas feeds the spark that helps to warm up the water in the boiler. For a perfectly functioning system, this method of heating is very efficient. However, this system can be susceptible to breakdowns if not maintained properly. If the boiler is not providing heat when it is turned on, follow these safety steps, and then have the system checked out.

If you can smell the gas or suspect a leakage, get everyone out of the home as quickly as possible. Try to contact everyone from a safe distance. However, if you do have to enter the home to get people and pets out, make sure to leave open windows and doors along the way. This will help ensure adequate ventilation is flowing through the home, so no one is caught in an enclosed space. Contact emergency services if anyone has inhaled the gas or assistance is needed in evacuating.

Shut off the gas from outside of the home instead of at the boiler. Many Gas-Fired Boilers have two shut-off valves. One is located next to the boiler the other is located on the outside of the home. You should know the location of these valves. If this location is a mystery, contact the local authorities and the gas company to have the gas shut off to the home. These numbers should be programmed into your phone.

Once the gas is shut off, the house will be tested for a safe re-entry. If it is safe, the gas valve to the boiler should also be shut off completely. Post signs or warnings against starting up the boiler system. Have the gas company assess the gas piping to identify if there is any leakage in the main gas pipe. After this system has been evaluated, the boiler should also be evaluated for gas leakage. All Gas-Fired Boilers are designed to burn all of the gas feed into the system.

While gas is a safe and efficient means of providing fuel to the boiler, a gas leakage can prevent this from happening. After everyone is safely out, and the gas is shut off, the system can be checked. For more information on gas boilers, check out website domain.
